Title: Lover Avenged
Series/World: Black Dagger Brotherhood, Book 7
Couple/Pairing: Rehvenge & Ehlena
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐¾ (4.7/5)

Before this book, I’ll be honest… the series wasn’t hitting the same for me. But Lover Avenged completely shifted that. Rehvenge’s story is darker, more intense, and layered in a way that pulls you in and doesn’t let go. This is the kind of Black Dagger Brotherhood story that reminds you why you got hooked in the first place.

The Main Characters
Rehvenge… I did not expect to love him this much—but he’s one of my favorite characters in the series.
He’s dark, morally gray, and living a double (honestly triple) life—club owner, drug dealer, and half-symphath trying to keep that side of himself under control. But underneath all that? There’s this quiet, protective, almost fragile side that shows up when Ehlena enters his world.
Ehlena was such a refreshing heroine. Kind, strong, and grounded—but not weak. She sees who Rehv really is before he even allows himself to believe it. And I loved that about her. She didn’t try to “fix” him—she simply chose him.
About the Author
J.R. Ward has always been known for building layered worlds with interconnected storylines—and this book is a perfect example of that strength. Even with a large cast, she manages to weave everything together in a way that keeps you hooked, invested, and emotionally involved.
My Thoughts About the Book
This was a reread for me, and honestly? It hit even better the second time.
After feeling pretty disappointed with the previous two books in the series, Lover Avenged felt like a reset—a return to what made me fall in love with the Black Dagger Brotherhood in the first place.
The pacing, the emotional depth, the tension—it was all back.
Rehvenge’s story is intense. Between the blackmail, his internal struggle with his symphath side, and the danger surrounding him, this book had a darker edge that I really appreciated. And yet, his relationship with Ehlena brought this softness that balanced everything beautifully.
Their connection felt earned. The late-night calls, the hesitation, the “we shouldn’t be doing this”… it all built up in such a natural way.
And then—on top of that—you get:
- More Wrath and Beth (which I missed SO much)
- Xhex and John Matthew tension heating up
- Tohr’s emotional return (which still hurts, honestly)
- And a villain that finally feels worth hating
This book felt full in the best way. Like everything was finally moving again.

Almost Perfect… Except
The only thing that held this back from a full 5 stars for me is the same issue the series sometimes runs into—the number of storylines.
There’s a lot happening.
While I personally enjoy the multiple arcs, there were moments where it felt slightly overloaded. Some characters don’t get as much focus because there’s just so much going on at once.
But honestly? This didn’t take away from my enjoyment—it just made me want even more time with certain characters.

Favorite Quote
“Life is such a glorious trauma, is it not.”
This line perfectly captures the essence of Lover Avenged.
Rehvenge’s entire existence is built on contradiction—power and pain, control and chaos, darkness and vulnerability. And this quote reflects that duality so well. His life isn’t just difficult… it’s layered with trauma that somehow still holds moments of beauty, connection, and even love.
That’s what makes this story hit differently.
Because despite everything—his past, his secrets, the things he’s forced to endure—there’s still something glorious in the way he chooses to love, protect, and fight for a future he never thought he deserved. It’s messy. It’s heavy. It’s emotional.
And that’s exactly why it works. 🔥
Final Thoughts
This is officially my 3rd favorite book in the entire series, which means that he’s my 3rd favorite character, and that says a lot.
After two books that didn’t quite hit for me, Lover Avenged brought the Black Dagger Brotherhood right back on track. It reminded me why I’m so invested in this world, these characters, and their stories. Thank you, JR Ward, for bringing us back to BDB MAGNIFICENT STORYTELLING with this one.
