The Secrets in My Scowl Book Review
By A.E. VIA
Wow!!! I came across The Secret in My Scowl when I was browsing to see which one of A.E. Via’s books I have yet to read. This book’s blurb caught my attention, so I added it to my October TBR list. I am so glad I did because I thoroughly enjoyed this book. A.E. VIA did such a great job with these two characters, as she does in all her other books.
I recommend this author because her series is amazing. This book is her best work–in my opinion, and one of my favorite books in this genre.
This is a story about two men, Jacob and Wylde. Jacob, a divorce lawyer, has had some heartbreaks since high school, starting with his mom leaving him and his father to fend for themselves without a word. Then his first love broke his heart, then his relationship with his father happened…then he found out that the man with who he is in love cheated on him—one heartbreak after another. So, it’s understandable that he would swear off love forever. He created this wall around his heart. He never smiles, he is rude to everyone, he appears to be an all-around horrible person.
Wylde, a wedding planner, has had one heartbreak, but he is willing to move on from it and find love again. When Jacob first saw Wylde, he is instantly attracted to him, and although he was rude to both Wylde and his staff, Wylde could see through Jacob mean scowl because he knew there must be a reason for it.
The boys started a very slow relationship after Jacob’s friend with benefits told him they could only be friends because he found someone with who he is in love.
Wylde saw Jacob broke down, so he knew then that he is just a broken man, not the heartless jerk that every one thing he is–and what he wants everyone to believe–he wanted Jacob to trust him.
This story broke my heart over and over again. It was a gut-wrenching read from the very beginning–I had my stomach twisted up in knots. It is a story of love and heartbreak for both characters. The only difference is that one gave up on love and the other did not. The Secrets in My Scowl is jam-packed with romance and hot steamy scenes. As a matter of fact, this is the most romantic book I have read from this author.
Jacob and Wylde are the perfect couple. They complimented each other so well. There was so much chemistry between the two characters from the moment they met. Wylde is the perfect guy for Jacob because he understands him and goes out of his way to prove to Jacob that he is loved and that he can be trusted.
I was a little worried when they started their relationship because of how jaded Jacob was. I thought there would be some conflict in their relationship having to do with miscommunication or misunderstanding. Still, I was glad to see that Jacob and Wylde’s relationship was strong right from the beginning.
I love the difference between Jacob before he met Wylde and after.
Two things that confused me, though…I didn’t understand the whole mom reappears so many years with a convenient reason that made no sense. The second thing is his father. How did the town drunk have all those pictures of many important moments in his life? If his father was drunk and sleeping on the day of his graduation, how did he get those pictures of him at the event?
I was a tad bit confused about these two things…it could be just me.
I completely recommend this book if you are looking for a fantastic gay romance jam-packed with romance.
